In industries where durability, safety, and corrosion protection are essential, protective linings continue to assist asset owners maintain and extend the service life of their equipment. Abtrex Industries is committed to delivering comprehensive solutions for industrial tanks, and our recent hands-on demonstration with Carboline’s technical service  further strengthened the capabilities of our offerings.

Carboline Demo: Evaluating a New Spray-Applied Technology

Abtrex recently participated in a Carboline-led demonstration showcasing their spray-applied vinyl ester technology. During this session, Carboline provided training, product insight, and a controlled opportunity for our team to test the application characteristics of Plasite 4310 on a plate designed to ASTM D4228.

The plate was fabricated with tight corners, irregular shapes, and intricate details. It was designed to mimic the nooks, crannies, and complex geometries often found inside real storage tanks. The goal was to replicate real-life scenarios that technicians encounter during field work and ensure the product performs consistently across challenging surfaces.

As part of our preparation process, Abtrex completed a qualification plate in accordance with ASTM D4228. This practice evaluates an applicator’s ability to correctly install specified coatings and linings on a metal surface, especially when reliably meeting product specifications is critical. Wet film thickness measurements were also taken in accordance with ASTM D4414. This method allows technicians to target the required wet film thickness to achieve the specified dry film thickness. For example, if a coating has a volume solids content of 80%, applying 10 mils wet will yield a target dry film thickness of approximately 8 mils.

Carboline Plasite 4310 Spray ApplicationPlasite 4310: A Proven Lining Solution for Demanding Lining Services

Plasite is a vinyl ester system engineered for exceptional chemical and physical durability. Its specialized curing system and inert flake pigments create a resilient barrier ideal for harsh environments and demanding tank lining services. Designed for thick-film application, it is especially effective for storage tanks, steel tanks, and similar structures requiring robust protection against corrosive media.

This field project involved tanks used in agricultural service, specifically for pesticide storage, where chemical resistance is critical for long-term performance.

Spray Applied Epoxy VinylA First for Abtrex: Field Spraying of Epoxy Vinyl Ester Technology

While Abtrex has extensive experience installing epoxy linings and other specialty systems in our shop facilities, this initiative marks the first full deployment of spray-applied epoxy vinyl ester lining at a field site following our internal demo.

The lining was applied using a Graco King XL 45:1 air-assisted airless pump designed for heavy-duty corrosion protection applications. This high-output system provides consistent pressure control and supports high film builds while maintaining uniform spray characteristics. These capabilities are especially important when applying linings across varied tank surfaces and spray positions, where consistent material delivery and control are critical.

The field project included blasting and lining three tanks:

  • One 12’ OD × 41’ field tank
  • Two 12’ OD × 31’6” field tanks

Throughout surface preparation and lining application, QA/QC procedures were implemented to ensure conformance with project specifications. Surface profile following abrasive blasting was verified using replica tape, and dry film thickness was measured using a digital gauge. Upon completion of the lining, wet sponge testing was performed to verify coating continuity and identify any discontinuities.

Due to their scale, tanks of this size are typically installed in place and are not feasible to relocate to be lined in a shop setting. Applying this high-performance lining system successfully in the field showcases the versatility of the chemistry and underscores Abtrex’s commitment to supporting its customers.

Why Plasite 4310 Supports Today’s Lining System Requirements

Plasite 4310 offers a reliable option for modern tank coatings, providing excellent chemical resistance, strong mechanical integrity, and the ability to be installed as a thick film in both shop and field conditions. Its durability makes it a practical complement to traditional rubber linings, especially in applications where stainless steel alone may not offer sufficient protection. These characteristics allow the material to enhance service life in demanding environments and serve as a robust tank lining material where aggressive industrial conditions are present.

Moving Forward With Confidence

Abtrex Industries continues to lead in lining application offerings. With the Carboline demo and field installation completed, we are expanding what is possible for clients seeking safe, durable, and reliable tank linings.
